Garden Loft Launches First-of-its-Kind Smart Home Aging-in-Community Project

Garden Loft is collaborating with The Brenda Strafford Foundation and Alberta Innovates to test how smart homes, passive monitoring, and integrated health data can help older adults live safely and independently at home.

Garden Loft has launched a new health data integration project in partnership with The Brenda Strafford Foundation, with support from Alberta Innovates. The initiative will test how advanced accessible housing, smart home technology, passive monitoring, and real-time health insights can better support older adults to remain living safely in their communities of choice.

Garden Loft’s prefabricated homes are designed specifically for older adults and people with differing abilities. The homes include integrated safety features such as fall-safe flooring, continuous handrails and accessible kitchens and bathrooms. They also include non-invasive sensors that can monitor changes in mobility, sleep, and other wellness markers.

“This is more than a smart home. It’s a new model of care” - John Brown, Co-founder Garden Loft

This new data project will be deployed and tested in Garden Loft’s first community initiative, a 10-home development currently under construction in rural Southern Alberta. Garden Loft will refine and evaluate a green-yellow-red alert dashboard that helps older adults, caregivers, and healthcare providers understand when daily patterns are normal, when they may need attention, and when they could point to a more urgent health concern.

For example, subtle changes in fridge use, bathroom visits, or sleep patterns could be flagged early, helping caregivers and health providers intervene before issues escalate into emergency care.

“This is more than a smart home. It’s a new model of care,” said Garden Loft Co-founder John Brown.

Construction of the Garden Loft Village has begun, with the 10 units expected to be deployed and occupied by late 2026.

Congratulations to the Garden Loft team on this important step toward helping older adults live with greater safety, dignity, independence, and connection!
